The U.K.’s ‘‘Dash for Gas’’: A Rapid Evidence Assessment of Fracking for Shale Gas, Regulation, and Public Health
نویسندگان
چکیده
The evidence on public health regulation of the unconventional gas extraction (fracking) industry was examined using a rapid evidence assessment of fifteen case studies from multiple countries. They included scientific and academic papers, professional reports, government agency reports, industry and industry-funded reports, and a nongovernment organization report. Each case study review was structured to address strengths and weaknesses of the publication in relation to our research questions. Some case studies emphasized inherent industry short-, medium-, and long-term dangers to public health directly and through global climate change impacts. Other case studies argued that fracking could be conducted safely assuming industry best practice, ‘‘robust’’ regulation, and mitigation, but the evidence base for such statements proved generally sparse. U.K. regulators’ own assessments on fracking regulation are also evaluated. The existing evidence points to the necessity of a precautionary approach to protect public health from unconventional gas extraction

The rush to drill for natural gas: a public health cautionary tale.
Efforts to identify alternative sources of energy have focused on extracting natural gas from vast shale deposits. The Marcellus Shale, located in western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, is estimated to contain enough natural gas to supply the United States for the next 45 years. New drilling technology-horizontal drilling and high-volume hydraulic fracturing of shale (fracking)-has made gas ...

I have some serious concerns with Sari Kovats and colleagues’ Comment (March 1, p 757), as I feel it is misleading (albeit unintentionally). Although the UK Government has indeed stated that it accepts the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering Working Group’s recommendations on shale gas extraction, the reality is that only one of these recommendations has been implemented in full; one...
متن کاملMunicipalities and Hydraulic Fracturing: Trends in State Preemption
Hydraulic fracturing is a technology used to extract natural gas from shale rock formations found deep beneath the earth. It raises many public health and environmental issues of concern to municipalities and planners, both urban and rural. These issues range from potential water contamination and air pollution to noise, dust, truck traffic, and even minor earthquakes. This article identifies r...
متن کاملShale gas and fracking: examining the evidence
The fact that the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that natural gas power technology is a ‘bridge technology’ does not necessarily imply that shale gas will play any significant role in curbing GHG emissions. Indeed, we note that the median scenarios presented in AR5 for stabilising atmospheric concentrations between 430ppm and 530ppm ...
